Criminal Justice Standards Director

The North Carolina Department of Justice, led by the Attorney General of North Carolina, represents the state, state agencies, and elected officials, and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.

Recruitment Range: $73,096 - $118,754

The Director of the Criminal Justice Standards Section serves as the Program Administrator for the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission. In this capacity, the Director is responsible for the development, planning, implementation, administration and enforcement of existing and new programs of the Commission. The Director is also responsible the overall management of the Criminal Justice Standards Division, to include the daily operations of the Division, all administrative, personnel, budget and Department of Justice matters. The Director serves at the pleasure of the Attorney General and the Commission (G. S. 17C-9(b)) and in this capacity has full and complete accountability for program implementation and success.

Some travel, including some occasional overnight stays are required

Criminal Justice Standards is a Section of the Training & Standards Division of the North Carolina Department of Justice, which consists of three major units. These include the N.C. Justice Academy (East and West campuses), the Sheriffs’ Standards Section, and the Criminal Justice Standards Section. This Division provides a consolidated team of agencies and offices whose primary goal is to assure and advance the competence and integrity of the criminal justice professions.

The Training and Standards Division promotes the goal of competence and integrity in the criminal justice professions through employment and certification standards, professional training, and technical assistance. The Division accomplishes this goal through the provision of coordinated staffing support to the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission (G. S. 17C), the Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission (G. S. 17E), and the North Carolina Justice Academy (G. S. 17D). In addition, the Division works to promote coordination within the criminal justice system to minimize duplication and effective utilization of current resources.

 

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

  • Five (5) years or more of Law Enforcement experience.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience presenting to a board or Commission.

 

Minimum Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree in public administration, police administration, criminal justice, or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressively responsible administrative experience in the criminal justice system; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
