Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy Director

The Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance (TDCI) is seeking a dynamic and energetic law enforcement training professional for the role of Director of the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy (TLETA). Under the direction of the Commissioner of TDCI, this position is responsible providing oversight of TLETA operations, budgetary matters, law enforcement training curriculum and activities, and cadet/student services, and for directing the enforcement of all related policies and procedures. In addition, the Director serves as Executive Secretary of the Peace Officer Standard & Training (POST) Commission and is responsible for overseeing its regulatory functions.

Principal Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides oversight and direction of TLETA’s criminal justice and law enforcement training program and a staff of law enforcement training supervisors, training specialists, training instructors, and administrative and kitchen personnel.  
  • Provides oversight of operations of TLETA, which includes managing an approximately $6.5 million budget, campus/building maintenance and capital improvements, and cadet/student services (e.g., registration, housing, meal services, curriculum development, training, and safety).
  • Provides oversight of the regulatory and investigative functions of the POST Commission and its staff of supervisory, investigative, and administrative staff.
  • Serves as Executive Secretary of the POST Commission and its approximately $12.6 million budget and directs the administrative work on behalf of the Commission, including scheduling meetings, promulgation of rules, carrying out subcommittee meeting assignments, and disciplinary hearings.
  • Builds and maintains relationships and consults with law enforcement agencies, district attorneys, the judiciary, and relevant local, state, and national law enforcement organizations on necessary updates to law enforcement training and law enforcement best practices.
  • Maintains regular contact with relevant local, state, and national law enforcement organizations and attends relevant organizational meetings and conferences.

Preferred candidates possess a master’s degree or higher in criminal justice, criminology, law enforcement administration, law, or relevant field and at least 10 years of experience in law enforcement training and management.   

Candidate must have POST certification or equivalent; employment as a full-time law enforcement officer; graduation from a POST-certified (or equivalent) law enforcement training academy; must be able to obtain POST General Instructor and Specialized Instructor certifications; must be able to qualify with assigned firearms at least annually and must stay current in annual continual training including any required certifications; must be able to work with law enforcement agencies and/or other divisions of the criminal justice system to maintain current experience as a commissioned law enforcement officer.
